HWI began our Raptor Satellite Tracking Program to help determine how and where to most effectively tailor our raptor conservation efforts.  Since the program's inception in 1999, we have worked to address a variety of questions toward this end, including:

• Do individual birds use specific flyways consistently across seasons?

• What are the origins of migrant raptors flying above our migration monitoring sites?

• What are the different species' patterns of habitat use?

Detailed tracking maps for many of the birds outfitted to date can be accessed by following the links at the bottom of this page.  Due to (rapidly improving) technological limitations, the program has heretofore focused on three of the larger raptor species, including: Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, and Northern Goshawks.
