Long-term Monitoring and Community Science Field Biologist (Full-time permanent)

Purpose: The Field Biologist position supports all LTMCS projects including: American Kestrel Studies (~45%), Migration Monitoring (~35%), Following Forest Owls (~10%), Burrowing Owl Monitoring (~5%), and Studies of Urban Raptor Ecology (SURE) (~5%). This support includes field work, mentoring and managing members of community science teams, data curation, various equipment care and maintenance, and other tasks.

Location: Based in Salt Lake City, UT, with occasional travel, including remote camping, out of state. Short-term, temporary housing may be available for out of state hires upon start.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with and work alongside members of community science teams (volunteers,
    interns, technicians, graduate students, and supervisory biologists) to ensure teams are focused
    on meeting program goals.
  • Support network of long-term migration monitoring sites, including set-up, take-down, training,
    and crew communication.
  • Using optics (binoculars and spotting scopes) to document band status (and read colorband
    codes) of raptors observed in our study areas (American Kestrels, Cooper’s Hawks, Red-tailed
  • Safely trapping and banding adult and nestling raptors using a variety of techniques
  • Collection and curation of biological samples (feather, nail, waste, and blood samples)
  • Assist with deployment, recovery, and maintenance of archival GPS tags and other tracking
  • Data entry, quality control, and other data management tasks
  • Assist with data visualization, analyses, and reporting
  • Assist with equipment care and upkeep
  • Represent HWI and its efforts in a positive, professional, and courteous manner while in the
  • Keep track of hours, expenses, and mileage

Length of Appointment: This is a permanent, full-time position.

Time Commitment: 40 hrs/week, frequently more during peak of seasons for some programs. Some work will take place on weekends and outside of standard business hours. Temporary shared housing may be available for those that don’t live locally until they can secure housing.

Compensation: $39,000-43,000 DOE, with competitive benefits package (vacation, medical, vision, dental, 401K, and life insurance)

Preferred Qualifications and Skill Sets:

  • BS in biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field; OR equivalent work
  • Additional 2-4 years of experience in conservation research, preferably raptor-focused
  • Detail and solution-oriented team player with strong communication skills
  • Experience coordinating diverse Community Science team, including scheduling and
    prioritizing tasks, identifying data collection gaps and needs, and synthesizing observations
    into summary data files
  • Experience with the capture and handling of wild birds, preferably raptors
  • Experience identifying raptors in flight and familiarity with migration monitoring effort
  • Experience searching for, locating, and monitoring nests as part of demographic research
  • Experience with digital data entry
  • Experience gathering and working with various habitat data, including on the ground and
    remotely sensed metrics
  • Experience curating and using data from long-term research efforts
  • Logistics and planning experience in support of field teams (both remote and urban-based)
  • Willingness and ability to follow federal, local, and HWI Covid and other safety protocols
  • Ability to carry and climb a ladder to install, maintain, and look inside nest boxes
  • Ability to safely drive HWI vehicles, including large 4wd trucks, and occasionally use own
    transportation for field work (mileage reimbursed when personal vehicle used)
