HawkWatch International and its partners Receive National Conservation Award

The renowned avian conservation cooperative, Partners In Flight, awarded HawkWatch International and its partners (Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, and the Hawk Migration Association of North America) the National Conservation Award for Leadership at the 74th Annual North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Virginia last month. The award recognized the organizations for their exceptional contributions to the field of landbird conservation in the establishment of Raptor Populations Index (RPI) Project.

Partners in Flight acknowledged HawkWatch International and its RPI partners for furthering the goal of protecting migratory and resident landbirds and their habitats. As an award recipient, they were evaluated for their effective public awareness activities, innovative leadership, insightful ecological investigation, or sound land stewardship.

Accurate knowledge of population status and change is fundamental for bird conservation. Lack of reliable information on populations of many raptors forms a conspicuous gap in North American bird monitoring. The vision of the RPI partners is to contribute to effective conservation of migratory raptors through continent-wide long-term monitoring of raptor migration, scientifically sound assessments of population status, and public outreach and education.

Partners in Flight is a cooperative effort involving partnerships among federal, state and local government agencies, philanthropic foundations, professional organizations, conservation groups, industry, the academic community, and private individuals.

HawkWatch International (HWI) is a Salt Lake City-based nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the environment through education, long-term monitoring, and scientific research on raptors as indicators of ecosystem health.
