SUMMARY:Birding Trip in Corpus Christi\, TX
DESCRIPTION:Dates: September 29-Oct 2\, 2025\nPrice: $950 per person\nDeposit: $250\nSpaces Remaining: ONLY ONE SPACE LEFT! \nOverview\nKnown as America’s birdiest city\, Corpus Christi is the place to be during the fall migration season. Between August and November\, upwards of one million raptors can be counted at the Corpus Christi HawkWatch\, with daily counts sometimes in excess of 100\,000 migrants.  \nFollowing the annual Celebration of Flight festival\, join local photographer and Swarovski Optik Naturalist Clay Taylor and HawkWatch International’s own Dave Oleyar to experience the magic of migration during a four-day birding tour. From general birding in the morning to expert hawkwatching instruction in the afternoons\, you’re sure to see more than you could on your own. Plus\, you’ll be able to sit back and relax in a spacious van while we do the driving\, allowing you to (safely) take in all the birds\, all the time. We’ll also provide a boxed lunch each day\, so you don’t have to take a break from the action. \nWhat to Expect\nYou’ll be whisked away early each morning\, heading to the best spot to bird that day\, leveraging the expertise of your expert guides. You’ll have the chance to visit local birding hotspots around the Coastal Bend\, targeting its South Texas specialties such as the Green Jay\, Great Kiskadee\, and Olive Sparrow. Other possible birding locations include Blucher Park\, Tule Lake\, and Mustang Island\, the site of the reintroduction of the Aplomado Falcon. Other species you may have the chance to see include the Roseate Spoonbill\, Seaside Sparrow\, Clapper Rail\, and American Oystercatcher. \nAfter a few hours of general birding\, you’ll return to the platform at the Corpus Christi HawkWatch located in Hazel Bazemore Park for expert hawkwatching instruction and lunch. Timed for the peak Broad-winged Hawk migration\, you’ll have a fantastic chance of seeing tens of thousands of the species overhead on any given day. We’ll have you back to your hotel each afternoon around 2pm\, but those who are happy to hawkwatch are welcome to stay with us until the count concludes around 5:00pm. \nIf conditions allow\, we will also offer an opportunity to discover nocturnal species one evening. This is an optional activity that will start no earlier than 8pm and conclude no later than 10pm. \nWhat’s Included \n\nGuide costs\nDaily transportation in a spacious private van from Best Western Northwest Corpus Christi Inn & Suites*\nBoxed lunch\n\nWhat’s Not Included \n\nAccommodations*\nGratuities for guides\nMeals other than lunch*\nAlcohol\nOther personal items\n\n*Although lodging is not included\, we highly recommend staying at the Best Western\, as we have coordinated a HawkWatch rate of $99/night for a standard king room. You must call the Best Western at (361) 241-6363 to secure this rate. This is where we will pick up and drop off all registrants each day\, and the hotel will have breakfast ready ahead of your departure each morning. \nYour Guides \nDave Oleyar—HWI Tour Guide\nDave’s spark bird was the Scissor-tailed Flycatchers he’d see flying around in the open fields surrounding the neighborhood where he grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in the 1980’s. He matched this bird and others to some Audubon plates that his grandparents had sent\, and that was when paying attention to different kinds of birds began for Dave. Decades later\, he still loves watching birds and sharing his fascination with them with others in formal and informal settings. Now a broadly trained ecologist with expertise in population ecology\, avian conservation\, climate change impacts on wildlife\, and urban ecology\, Dave leads research teams focused on how these issues influence birds of prey. He’s been with HawkWatch International since 2013. \nClay Taylor—Swarovski Tour Guide\nClay Taylor became a birder in the mid-1970s\, both watching and photographing birds in the Northeastern United States. Nearly a half-century later\, he still enjoys hawk- and birdwatching and photography\, and has played key roles in establishing hawkwatch sites and connecting the people that flock to them. \nHold your spot by registering here and placing a $250 deposit. \nTerms & Conditions \n\nA deposit of $250 is required to reserve your spot and is subject to HWI’s Field Trip and Tour Policies. Final payment is due two weeks prior to the first day of the tour.\nThis tour is limited to 8 people to ensure an intimate\, high-quality experience for everyone. The minimum number of participants is 4. In the event the minimum is not reached\, we will refund your deposit of $500.\nIn the event of poor weather or other suboptimal conditions at the HawkWatch\, we may opt to continue birding elsewhere. We’ll be flexible\, so you see as much as possible during your time with us.\n\nThank you to Swarovski for partnering with us on this event.

SUMMARY:Why Raptors at the Clark Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:HawkWatch International makes the claim that we can conserve entire ecosystems simply by focusing on the birds of prey that live in them. Join Education and Outreach Director Melissa Halvorsen and special guest\, Goose the Peregrine Falcon\, as they weave together three stories that make the case for protecting these charismatic birds as indicators of ecosystem health. \nAbout Melissa\nMelissa credits her love of animals to early years spent following her biologist father around in the field whenever she wasn’t in school. After pursuing a B.A. in English from Weber State University\, she began working as an interpretive ranger for the National Park Service. It was doing this work that helped her realize she could unite her love of storytelling and the natural world by working as an informal environmental educator. Since then\, she has worked for state and national parks\, nature centers\, schools\, zoos\, and aquariums. She is currently the Education and Outreach Director at HawkWatch International. \nMelissa has certifications in Environmental Education from Utah State University and Instructional Design from the University of Utah. Melissa is excited to share HawkWatch International’s mission with the world and hopes to reach new audiences with creative approaches to teaching and learning. \nWhen Melissa has spare time\, she likes to read\, play complicated board games\, and start craft projects she never intends to finish. She has a fantastic husband\, two incredibly smart (and nerdy) children\, and lots of adorable pets. \nAbout Science Utah\nClark Planetarium’s Science Utah Lecture Series is dedicated to bringing the latest scientific discoveries and discussions to the public\, for free\, by offering engaging lectures led by Utah-based scientists and researchers working in various fields. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but seating is limited. Please reserve only the number of tickets you will use. Click here to register. \n  \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Celebration of Flight
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the magic of migration during the annual Celebration of Flight Festival at the Corpus Christi HawkWatch at Hazel Bazemore County Park. This is a family-friendly event with free activities in the park that coincide with peak Broad-winged Hawk migration in September. Thanks to our partners at the Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi and the many volunteers who make this festival possible. Vendors and food trucks will be present throughout the festival. \nSchedule to come! \nDirections to Hazel Bazemore County Park\nTake FM624 west from SH77 for about 1 mile. Take a right onto County Road 69 at the stoplight (look for the park sign)\, which takes you to the park. \nLooking for Accommodations?\nYou can get a HawkWatcher discount at the Best Western Northwest Corpus Christi Inn & Suites! King rooms are $99/night\, or upgrade to a suite with a kitchenette for $114.99 (before taxes and fees)! You must call the local Best Western to receive the discount: (361) 241-6363.
