SUMMARY:Arizona Cavity Adopting Raptor Ecology Studies (CARES) Volunteer Kick-off
DESCRIPTION:HawkWatch International (HWI) is looking for community scientists! \nThrough our Cavity Adopting Raptor Ecology Studies (CARES)\, we monitor hundreds of nest boxes built to house Western Screech-owls\, American Kestrels\, and more across diverse landscapes. Community scientists will be assigned a box (or several!) to monitor throughout the nesting season.  \nIf you live in the Tucson\, AZ area\, this session is for you! Although attendance is not required for returning community scientists\, the information sessions will be a great opportunity to hear more about updates on the program and ask questions you might have. We’ll also have light refreshments\, and it’s a perfect opportunity to connect with the biologists and other people on our CARES community science team. If you can’t make it in person\, we will also have a recorded version available. \nPlease sign up here if you plan to attend in person or would like the recording. The address will be sent once your attendance is confirmed. \n

SUMMARY:Why Raptors at the Clark Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:HawkWatch International makes the claim that we can conserve entire ecosystems simply by focusing on the birds of prey that live in them. Join Education and Outreach Director Melissa Halvorsen and special guest\, Goose the Peregrine Falcon\, as they weave together three stories that make the case for protecting these charismatic birds as indicators of ecosystem health. \nAbout Melissa\nMelissa credits her love of animals to early years spent following her biologist father around in the field whenever she wasn’t in school. After pursuing a B.A. in English from Weber State University\, she began working as an interpretive ranger for the National Park Service. It was doing this work that helped her realize she could unite her love of storytelling and the natural world by working as an informal environmental educator. Since then\, she has worked for state and national parks\, nature centers\, schools\, zoos\, and aquariums. She is currently the Education and Outreach Director at HawkWatch International. \nMelissa has certifications in Environmental Education from Utah State University and Instructional Design from the University of Utah. Melissa is excited to share HawkWatch International’s mission with the world and hopes to reach new audiences with creative approaches to teaching and learning. \nWhen Melissa has spare time\, she likes to read\, play complicated board games\, and start craft projects she never intends to finish. She has a fantastic husband\, two incredibly smart (and nerdy) children\, and lots of adorable pets. \nAbout Science Utah\nClark Planetarium’s Science Utah Lecture Series is dedicated to bringing the latest scientific discoveries and discussions to the public\, for free\, by offering engaging lectures led by Utah-based scientists and researchers working in various fields. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but seating is limited. Please reserve only the number of tickets you will use. Click here to register. \n  \n\n\n\n\n

As the co-founder of the Veracruz River of Raptors Project\, Steve offers participants unparalleled insights into one of the world’s most spectacular migration events. Currently based in Bozeman\, Montana\, Steve continues to inspire bird enthusiasts through his company\, Merlin Birding & Nature Tours \nKashmir (Kash) Wolf—Senior Biologist and Guide\, Pronatura Veracruz\nKash Wolf is a skilled biologist and seasoned birding guide with deep roots in raptor conservation. He joined the Veracruz River of Raptors Project in 2008 and now serves as its Project Coordinator. Since college\, Kash has worked across Mexico and the U.S. studying species like the endangered Black-capped Vireo and Golden-cheeked Warbler. A former intern at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary\, he brings over a decade of field experience and sharp birding instincts to every outing. Kash has been guiding tours for Merlin Birding & Nature Tours since 2017. \nDave Oleyar—Director of Long-term Monitoring & Community Science\, HawkWatch International\nDave’s spark bird was the Scissor-tailed Flycatchers he’d see flying around in the open fields surrounding the neighborhood where he grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in the 1980’s. He matched this bird and others to some Audubon plates that his grandparents had sent\, and that was when paying attention to different kinds of birds began for Dave. Decades later\, he still loves watching birds and sharing his fascination with them with others in formal and informal settings. Now a broadly trained ecologist with expertise in population ecology\, avian conservation\, climate change impacts on wildlife\, and urban ecology\, Dave leads research teams focused on how these issues influence birds of prey.
