SUMMARY:Arizona Cavity Adopting Raptor Ecology Studies (CARES) Volunteer Kick-off
DESCRIPTION:HawkWatch International (HWI) is looking for community scientists! \nThrough our Cavity Adopting Raptor Ecology Studies (CARES)\, we monitor hundreds of nest boxes built to house Western Screech-owls\, American Kestrels\, and more across diverse landscapes. Although attendance is not required for returning community scientists\, the information sessions will be a great opportunity to hear more about updates on the program and ask questions you might have. We’ll also have light refreshments\, and it’s a perfect opportunity to connect with the biologists and other people on our CARES community science team. If you can’t make it in person\, we will also have a recorded version available. \nPlease sign up here if you plan to attend in person or would like the recording. The address will be sent once your attendance is confirmed. \n

SUMMARY:Why Raptors at the Clark Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:HawkWatch International makes the claim that we can conserve entire ecosystems simply by focusing on the birds of prey that live in them. Join Education and Outreach Director Melissa Halvorsen and special guest\, Goose the Peregrine Falcon\, as they weave together three stories that make the case for protecting these charismatic birds as indicators of ecosystem health. \nAbout Melissa\nMelissa credits her love of animals to early years spent following her biologist father around in the field whenever she wasn’t in school. After pursuing a B.A. in English from Weber State University\, she began working as an interpretive ranger for the National Park Service. It was doing this work that helped her realize she could unite her love of storytelling and the natural world by working as an informal environmental educator. Since then\, she has worked for state and national parks\, nature centers\, schools\, zoos\, and aquariums. She is currently the Education and Outreach Director at HawkWatch International. \nMelissa has certifications in Environmental Education from Utah State University and Instructional Design from the University of Utah. Melissa is excited to share HawkWatch International’s mission with the world and hopes to reach new audiences with creative approaches to teaching and learning. \nWhen Melissa has spare time\, she likes to read\, play complicated board games\, and start craft projects she never intends to finish. She has a fantastic husband\, two incredibly smart (and nerdy) children\, and lots of adorable pets. \nAbout Science Utah\nClark Planetarium’s Science Utah Lecture Series is dedicated to bringing the latest scientific discoveries and discussions to the public\, for free\, by offering engaging lectures led by Utah-based scientists and researchers working in various fields. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but seating is limited. Please reserve only the number of tickets you will use. Click here to register. \n  \n\n\n\n\n

From there\, it’s a short hike up to the HawkWatch\, making this site far more accessible than many ridgetop migration sites. \nWe’ll arrive just as the temperatures begin to rise and the day’s flight begins to pick up. You’ll have plenty of time to hawkwatch with Frankie and this year’s crew\, learning more about how raptors use mountain ridges and updrafts to make their way south each fall. You also may have the opportunity to see a wild bird of prey up close if the banding blind is open that day. \nWe’ll head back to Salt Lake City around 4:00 pm so you’re home in time for dinner. \nWhat’s Included \n\nGuide costs\nDaily transportation in a spacious private van from our headquarters in Salt Lake City\, Utah\nBoxed lunch\n\nWhat’s Not Included \n\nAccommodations\nGratuities for guides\nMeals other than lunch\nOther personal items\n\nTerms & Conditions \n\nThis trip is subject to HWI’s Field Trip and Tour Policies. SUMMARY:Rocky Mountain Power CARES about Raptors
DESCRIPTION:Click here to reserve your seat. \nHawkWatch International has been investigating the decline of American Kestrels for over a decade. Thanks to the support of hundreds of community scientists and partners like Rocky Mountain Power\, we’ve monitored hundreds of nest boxes during the breeding season\, learning more about the diets\, breeding success\, and survival of kestrels and other cavity-nesting raptors. You’re invited to learn more about North America’s smallest falcon—and meet one for yourself—during this special\, family-friendly program. \nJoin us to learn more about American Kestrels and how you can play a role in raptor conservation. PLUS\, you’ll meet the newest member of HWI’s team of Raptor Ambassadors—a female American Kestrel who will help spread the word about this program. We’ll unveil her name\, her story\, and her special connection with HWI during this program that serves as her official open house. \nAfter a short (~30-minute) free program\, you’re invited to stick around for hands-on learning opportunities. Snag a selfie with our new bird\, get up close and personal with real-life raptor feathers before coloring one to take home\, and learn more about how Rocky Mountain Power is supporting raptor conservation across the West. \nThis is a free program\, but space is limited. We recommend registering to reserve your spot.
