Global Bird Area Dedication at Grand Canyon National Park, Yaki Point

HWI's Yaki and Lipan Points raptor migration sites have long since been designated as Important Bird Areas (IBA) due to the high number and diversity of raptors and other avian species that migrate through the area. Our annual counts at these two sites documented some of the highest concentrations in the western U.S. and Canada, leading to the IBA designation.

Last year, Birdlife International and their North American partners, the National Audubon Society and the Arizona Bird Conservation Initiative, expanded the status to include the entire Grand Canyon National Park and designated it as a Global Important Bird Area. The IBA program is an effort to preserve habitat crucial to bird life and, in this case, a Global A-1 designation has been conferred in recognition of the importance of this habitat to the California Condor and the Mexican Spotted Owl, both species being of global conservation concern.

IBA Dedication Ceremony

A dedication and celebration of this new Global IBA designation will take place on Saturday, September 13, 2014. Coinciding with the park's Celebrate Wildlife Day, education events and activities will take place throughout the day, with the official ceremony taking place at 1:30pm at the Yaki Point migration site. Please join HawkWatch International, the Audubon Society, The Arizona Bird Conservation Initiative, and the National Parks Service for this important and monumental event!
