Raptor ID Workshop and Field Trip at Pro Photo Supply

HawkWatch International is hosting a free Raptor ID Workshop to help you hone your identification skills for the migration season. Meet a live raptor by AFW's Close Encounters. After the workshop, we will go on a hawkwatching field trip at Sauvie Island to put those new ID skills to practice.

Our friends at Pro Photo Supply will be hosting a photo workshop right after the Raptor ID Workshop. Stick around for some wildlife photography tips and tricks from the professionals. Take your camera to our hawkwatching field trip afterwards and put those photography tips to practice.

Where: Pro Photo Supply Event Center (1801 NW Northrup Street, Portland, OR 97209)
Special Instructions: Bring your binoculars and camera! You will need to purchase a parking permit for Sauvie Island Widlife Area. We will meet at the 7-11 convenience store off the island at 1pm to get permits and caravan (14491 N. W. St. Helens Road). Plan on two hours to drive the loop and stop at points of interest.

FIELD TRIP UPDATE: We will meet at 1pm at 7-11/Subway just before the bridge; we will then head across the Sauvie Island bridge to the parking lot across from the corner store. LOOK FOR THE HAWK MOBILE (Subaru). We will drive to the Wildife area on the NW end of the Island, to the last parking lot past Grassy Lake. We will be there hawk and bird watching until 3pm Come join at any time.

Migration Day at Bonney Butte

Raptor migration is one of the greatest spectacles of the skies! Come visit a live migration research site for a day of outdoor fun and hawkwatching. HawkWatch International's Bonney Butte migration site is located in Mt. Hood National Forest and has been in operation for more than 20 years. Enjoy the drive and hike in the forest, and spend some time at the site with the HawkWatch crew who will help you spot and identify migrating raptors. Banding operations take place at the site, so chances are you'll get the rare opportunity to see wild raptors up close and personal that were just trapped and banded.

Special Instructions: High clearance vehicle recommended for the last 4 miles of Forest Service road. Bring your binoculars. Dress in layers. Bring water and snacks.

Talkin Birds at Grand Canyon

Join Jerry Liguori and the Grand Canyon HawkWatch crew for a day of hawk watching at Yaki Point during Talkin' Birds on September 10.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Arizona's condor reintroduction, and the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty, the National Park Service (NPS) will be hosting Talkin' Birds Weekend Sept. 10-11 in Grand Canyon National Park.  All events are free and open to the public and will include educational opportunities, bird walks, demonstrations and presentations by various birding and environmental organizations.

Hawkwatching at Bountiful Peak

Join us for our Wednesday hawkwatching series this fall migration season.

Because most of our migration sites are in remote areas across the west, we are offering something a little closer for locals.  We will begin with a presentation on migration and raptor identification on Sept 7, and then get outdoors with our eyes to the skies each Wednesday, Sept 14 - Oct 12.  We invite you to join us for any of the field trips listed below, for all or part of the day.

Please register for each field trip individually that you will be attending (click on the field trip date on the events calendar and use the registration link at the bottom of the page). If there are any changes to time, day, or location due to weather or other circumstances, we will communicate with you via email prior to the field trip.  If the flight is good that day, we may stay longer than 2 pm.

          September 7  |  6:30- 8 pm: Migration and ID Presenation at the HWI Office

          September 14  |  10 am- 2pm: Hawkwatching at Bountiful Peak

          September 21  |  10 am- 2pm: Hawkwatching at Commissary Ridge

Bountiful Peak

Our lookout location is at the lookout at Bountiful Peak. Click here for driving directions from the HWI Office, and  click here for more information on Bountiful Peak.  We recommend carpooling if you are in a group.  Make sure to wear suitable hiking shoes, bring water, snacks, and your binoculars.

Hawkwatching at Commissary Ridge

Commissary Ridge

Commissary Ridge HawkWatch is located right outside of Kemmerer, Wyoming (about 2.5 hours from Salt Lake City).  We will meet at the HWI Office to carpool and caravan to the site at 8 am, returning by 4 pm.  You are welcome to follow the directions below and meet us at the site as well.  There is a very short hike/walk from the site to the lookout at Commissary Ridge, so make sure to wear suitable hiking shoes.  Weather can vary quite a bit, so also pack a wind jacket and some layers in case of low temps, and a hat and sunscreen in case of high temps.  Bring water, lunch/snacks, and your binoculars.
