Meet the Artist: Kristen Vardanega

Working with Endangered Secretarybirds is not something our team takes lightly. These stunning birds are an honor to learn more about, especially when so much remains unknown. In light of recent rapid declines, our team is uncovering causes of breeding failures, identifying ways to improve nesting success, and learning about their movement ecology.

We’ve seen a lot of success so far, like putting out the first-ever transmitter on an adult Secretarybird! To celebrate these big wins and continue spreading awareness about this at-risk species, we decided it is time to introduce these birds to our merchandise offerings. We tapped an artist local to our headquarters in Utah, Kristen Vardanega, whose work often focuses on the beauty of the natural world. We were particularly excited to work with Kristen as she is an expert in her use of color, which was only fitting for the vibrant yellows and oranges the Secretarybird dons. What is your “spark bird,” aka the species that sparked your interest in birds?

Probably Red-winged Blackbirds! I went to college in Montana and would hear these crazy robotic sounds while studying by a reed-rimmed pond. I had never paid much attention to birds before, but once I learned that the sound belonged to these cheeky little birds with striking red wings, that soon snowballed into spending time in wetlands with my Audubon book. They’re pretty common, but spotting them and hearing their calls still fills me with wonder and joy.

What inspires your work?

The grandeur and smallness I feel while out in nature. Those fleeting moments of striking shadows or a moment of sparkly light just compel me to paint.

What do you do outside of your art?

I love to bike, ski, and explore outside with my dog, Juniper. I also spend a lot of time on the couch, knitting and listening to audiobooks.

Where can people find and support you?

My Instagram is @littletinyegg, and my website is Littletinyegg.com! I have a submission form on my website if you’d like to work together!
