About HawkWatch International

Founded in 1986, HawkWatch International (HWI) is a raptor conservation nonprofit with a mission to conserve the environment through education, long-term monitoring, and scientific research on raptors as indicators of ecosystem health. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we’re looking to welcome a new member to the team who can help our organization soar to new heights (and who likes a groan-worthy pun, obviously).

About the Position

Do you like to fly like (or as much as) an eagle? Do you flock to people like a bird on migration? Then we have our (eagle) eye on you! HWI is excited to grow its team this summer by welcoming its first Development Manager—an outgoing self-starter interested in helping shape our fundraising strategy and grow in their fundraising career.

Reporting to the Development & Communications Director, the Development Manager will play a key role in helping connect committed conservationists across the country with ways they can conserve raptors and our shared environment. We expect the Development Manager to initially focus on special events and building relationships with supporters in the communities where we work, but the ideal candidate will be someone who wishes to grow their skill set to include major gifts in the coming months and years.

While the Development & Communications team is growing and working to specialize more within roles, this is a small team (three people, including you!). The ideal candidate will be excited to participate in any and all work the department leads, from grant writing to selling merchandise at events to donor stewardship.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Event Planning & Execution (40%+)

  • Plan and execute key events, including HWI’s annual fundraiser, Wings Across the West, and other community events like the HawkWatch Holiday Market
  • Assist the Development & Communications Director with identifying, cultivating, and soliciting event sponsors and in-kind donors
  • Assist the Communications Manager with creating communications pieces related to events, including invitations, websites, and social media content
  • Create and manage a volunteer program to support events

Donor Engagement & Stewardship (30%+)

  • Develop and maintain genuine relationships with key donors
  • Create and manage regular donor touch points, from quarterly Zoom calls with program managers to trips into the field with HWI scientists
  • Track donor engagement in CRM for the Development & Communications team
  • Play a part in making large direct asks, with support from the Development & Communications Director and Executive Director

Individual Giving Campaigns (~20%)

  • Collaborate with the Development & Communications Director to create individual giving campaigns (2-3 annually)
  • Update and clean CiviCRM database to keep information updated and free of duplicates
  • Generate and prep mailing lists as needed
  • Assist the Development Director in ensuring prompt and appropriate stewardship of all donors

The other 10% of the position’s time will be spent on grants, one-off projects, professional development, and other duties as assigned. It also allows a buffer for when the primary duties mentioned above are more time-intensive.

Qualifications

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Hawk-like eye for detail (Multiple puns in one description? Yep, this is your manager’s style.)
  • Comfort making direct requests for funding, volunteers, etc.
  • Ability to solve problems and prioritize workload independently
  • Comfort working as part of a distributed team
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with or a willingness to quickly learn new systems, including Monday.com, Slack, Google Suite for Nonprofits, etc.

Characteristics That Will Set You Apart

  • Prior experience managing large (100+ person) events from start to finish
  • At least some prior experience making direct asks
    • We will ask about this in the interview. While you don’t need experience asking for a certain size gift, you should be comfortable asking for gifts as large as $5,000 independently. Volunteer experience counts!
  • Prior experience supporting annual fund/direct mail campaigns, such as writing letter copy, creating ask strings, and creating donation pages that convert
  • Familiarity with fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Website management and/or development skills
  • True passion for conservation

Additional Information

  • This is an in-person role based out of our headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. A hybrid schedule may be possible with prior coordination and approval of the Development & Communications Director.

You’ll stay connected through weekly 1:1s with your manager and regular communication over Slack. The team also connects monthly over Zoom and quarterly for in-person team retreats.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is available, but applicants must generally be available to work 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. During periods where the workload requires working overtime, comp time is provided to promote a healthy work-life balance for employees.

  • As part of our commitment to providing a safe and secure work environment, we conduct background checks on all prospective employees. These checks are conducted in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and are designed to ensure that our hiring decisions are based on legitimate, non-discriminatory reasons.
  • Key Points:
    • Consent: We obtain written consent before conducting any background check.
    • Transparency: Should any information from a background check potentially impact hiring decisions, we will provide you with a copy of the report and an opportunity to respond.
    • Non-discrimination: We apply the same standards to all candidates, regardless of race, national origin, color, sex, religion, disability, genetic information, or age.
    • Relevance: A criminal record will not automatically disqualify you from employment. We will consider the nature and timing of any offenses in relation to the job requirements.
    • Mandatory: Final approval of hiring is contingent upon completion of the background check process.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We believe that just as in nature, diversity in the workforce fosters adaptability, resilience, and well-being. We strive to build a team that reflects the stakeholders and communities we serve and the places we work. Our goal is to create an environment where each team member feels valued, respected, and empowered in their work.

Compensation

Health, dental, and vision insurance is available to employees, with premiums 100% covered by HawkWatch International. We also match employee contributions to an IRA up to 3%. Paid time off begins at 12 vacation days and 9 personal days per year, as well as 8 federal holidays.
