Meet the Artist: Kate Dolamore

Our Following Forest Owl program is often described as magical—perhaps it is because of the beauty of our study areas in the mountains of Northern Utah and the Chiricahuas of Arizona. Maybe it’s the magic of seeing small owls that typically go unnoticed, or are out late at night when we’re usually fast asleep.

To capture that magic, we reached out to artist Kate Dolamore. Kate is a true naturalist. In her work, you can see that anything wild captures her attention and fascination, resulting in beautifully detailed pieces. When planning our Following Forest Owl Greeting Cards, Kate took great care to include all elements of the research and local environment, including the trees and insects one might encounter while owling. What is your “spark bird,” aka the species that sparked your interest in birds?

The Northern Parula. I had already started down the path to birding, but it was the sighting of a Northern Parula that had me buying my first pair of binoculars a week later! The discovery of beautiful warblers high up in the canopy was life-changing.

What inspires your work?

I started painting birds in the field guide style in 2010 to get better at IDing them, and that drives me to this day. I love to learn more about nature through my paintings, and that I can share my work with others.

What do you do outside of your art?

My life revolves around nature—birds, native plants, insects, everything. I love to help with bioblitzes, invasive plant removal, native plant monitoring, and bird and butterfly counts.

Where can people find and support you?
