When we first started looking for artists to design this year’s migration t-shirt, we knew we wanted someone who could marry the beauty and joy of watching raptors migrate with the important scientific research conducted at these sites. I was thrilled to connect with Kendel, who I soon learned was a nature lover through and through, with an obvious love of birds.
Kendel’s work isn’t hyper-realistic, but you can tell in her pieces that she knows her stuff. Kendel worked with us to perfect the American Goshawk, and Merlin featured on this year’s shirt—two birds we see in relatively high numbers at the Bonney Butte HawkWatch. We hope that when you see this design, you feel transported to the butte, looking out at raptors migrate across Mt. Hood. What is your “spark bird,” aka the species that sparked your interest in birds?
When I was young, a pair of Red-tailed Hawks lived near us, and I loved watching them fly above and hunt in the fields nearby. This is one of my earliest experiences that sparked my interest in birds, especially raptors.
As I continued practicing art, birds became one of my favorite subjects to draw and paint. In 2022, I started working with raptors at Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary. Their resident Turkey Vulture and American Kestrel completely stole my heart. Being able to work with birds of prey has really solidified how much of an inspiration they are to me.
What inspires your work?
Nature has always been a passion of mine. Whether it’s painting landscapes of places I’ve been or capturing the essence of animals I love. From taking care of my own animals, birdwatching, and animal keeping, I have a huge heart for all of the critters, big and small. Especially the ones that are misunderstood.
Art has this amazing ability to connect people and inspire. My goal with my art is to inspire others to see the beauty and importance of the creatures we share this planet with.
What do you do outside of your art?
When I’m not drawing or painting, you can find me hanging out with my animals, playing video games, birdwatching, and traveling. My husband and I also love hiking and exploring with our dog.
