Overview
There’s a reason that everyone wants to go to the Goshutes. There’s also a reason that not everyone does. Join us on this guided journey where we’ll make it as easy as possible to reach one of the highest volume HawkWatch sites in the West, the Goshute Mountains HawkWatch. Plus, you’ll have the exclusive opportunity to camp out overnight at the top of the mountain.

What to Expect

After meeting your fellow participants at our headquarters in Salt Lake City, you’ll join a caravan of SUVs to make the ~2-hour drive to the Goshute Mountains HawkWatch, located just outside West Wendover, Nevada. From there, it’s a ~2.5 mile hike up ~1,800 vertical feet to the HawkWatch.

We’ll arrive to the count site around mid-day, as the migrating raptors take advantage of the warmth of the thermals. You’ll have plenty of time to hawkwatch with our biologists and this year’s crew, learning more about how raptors use mountain ridges and updrafts to make their way south each fall. You also may have the opportunity to see a wild bird of prey up close if the banding blind is open that day.

In addition to expert hawkwatching instruction from our team, you’ll enjoy several meals with our team—a boxed lunch at the trailhead before we hike to the top of the Goshute Mountains HawkWatch on Saturday, followed by a campfire dinner (provided fire restrictions allow it) with the crew that night. After breakfast on Sunday morning, we’ll pack sack lunches for the trip back and enjoy a little more hawkwatching before we have to head down the mountain and back to Salt Lake City. Plus, we’ll provide round-trip transportation from our headquarters in Salt Lake City.
