Call Vande Veegaete

He/Him

Call began his lifelong fascination with the natural sciences by wearing through the spine of a children’s illustrated encyclopedia of animals. A Salt Lake local, he had one of his first close experiences with wildlife during childhood, rescuing a kestrel tangled in fishing line.

During his teen years, he worked as an educator for the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, eventually pursuing a degree in theatrical performance. During his BFA, Call began work for the Natural History Museum of Utah in public programs and Scales and Tails Utah, developing his vocational skills in science communication. Eventually, finding himself working as a wildland firefighter, he developed a deep sense of connection to our western ecosystems.

Call joined the HawkWatch International team in 2025, and he is thrilled to feel so aligned with the mission of HWI and to have the opportunity to help close The Nature Gap.

In his off hours, he can be found in the mountains, reading trash fiction, cultivating strange and interesting plants, playing dungeons, and making music with friends.
