Overview
Want to experience the magic of migration, but intimidated about visiting a site on your own? We’ve got just the trip for you!
Join the HawkWatch International team for this post-fundraiser field trip to the Manzano Mountains HawkWatch south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. In addition to expert hawkwatching instruction from our team, you’ll enjoy one of our favorite fall field trip meals for lunch as well as round-trip transportation from a meetup point in southeastern Albuquerque along I-40.Â
What to Expect
After meeting your fellow participants at our headquarters in Salt Lake City, you’ll join us in SUVs for a~1.5-hour drive to the Manzano Mountains HawkWatch, located south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. From there, it’s a 0.7-mile hike to the observation area. This is a moderate trail with few rocky sections and little rolling elevation gain.
We’ll arrive just as the temperatures begin to rise and the day’s flight begins to pick up. You’ll have plenty of time to hawkwatch with our biologists and this year’s crew, learning more about how raptors use mountain ridges and updrafts to make their way south each fall. You also may have the opportunity to see a wild bird of prey up close if the banding blind is open that day.
Then we’re back to Albuquerque by dinnertime!
